The proper use of mediaJET®
products.

Thank you for choosing mediaJET®! Our versatile printing media have been specifically designed and curated for the applications and requirements of demanding photographers and artists. Whether it’s a classic portrait print, the reproduction of artworks, or special prints on striking surfaces – our unique printing media always provide the perfect foundation for long-lasting photo and FineArt prints in the highest quality. To achieve optimal print results and durability with the mediaJET® Collection papers, please pay attention to our included application instructions.

Useful information

  • Photo and FineArt media should be stored in their original packaging, at a temperature of 15-25°C, in a dark environment with a relative humidity of 45-60%. Do not store in rooms with potential concentrations of harmful substances or those used for processing solvent-based lacquers, paints, varnishes, or similar materials. This can lead to paper and coating discoloration.
  • When further processing and packaging prints, do not use films and adhesives containing plasticizers and/or solvents. Instead, use only PA/PE composite films and labels with water-based adhesives. This will prevent discoloration of the paper through the packaging.

  • A 24-hour climate acclimatization in the processing area is recommended. By wearing cotton gloves, you can avoid fingerprints, as moisture and skin oils can affect the quality of the print.
  • The coated side of the FineArt paper is intended for printing. This specific printing side is facing up in the packaging for sheets, and on the outside for rolls.
  • We recommend using the device-specific single-sheet feed when printing on our photo and FineArt media, where the paper ideally runs flat through the printer. Be sure to follow your printer manufacturer’s recommendations and avoid creases, folds, and rolling of the paper, as this can cause issues during printing.
  • The best results are achieved when using water-based dye/pigment inks. Using pigment inks ensures higher lightfastness for inkjet prints. After printing, these papers should not be exposed to direct sunlight, excessive moisture, or high temperatures to avoid negatively affecting the image and color properties.
  • We recommend calibrating the papers for the printers and corresponding inks beforehand. The best printing results are achieved with the correct settings in the printer drivers and ICC profiles, which we provide online for various printers. Without calibration, color shifts may occur.
  • The optimal conditions for processing mediaJET® papers are between 20-30°C and 30-55% relative humidity. After printing and before further processing, allow the FineArt paper to dry thoroughly. Ideally, the drying time should be 24 hours or at least overnight.
  • Our media are specifically designed for prints using an inkjet printer with original ink. Other printers, such as laser printers, may be damaged and are not suitable.
  • When printing multiple sheets of matte paper consecutively, fine abrasion can affect the transport within the printer. In this case, simply run a few sheets of uncoated standard paper through the printer to absorb the abrasion.
  • Our protective spray for FineArt and matte coated papers increases UV stability and protects high-quality prints from negative environmental influences, fingerprints, and moisture.

Using densitometric measurement, the optical color density (D-Max) on a substrate can be determined. The higher the color density in a photo or FineArt print, the more brilliant the colors and the deeper the blacks.

The Ink Limit is a value that determines when the medium can no longer absorb the ink sharply at the edges. The higher the Ink Limit, the better the color precision of the print and the more vibrant the colors. High-quality papers typically have an Ink Limit of > 200%.

In general, it should be noted that all printing inks, prints, and even the paper will fade, lose intensity, or yellow to varying degrees depending on the intensity and duration of light exposure. Papers should be at least 100 years lightfast and have minimal – preferably no – negative effects on prints made with branded inks (especially pigmented inks). Lightfastness is also influenced by the amount of optical brighteners in the paper.

Archival-quality papers are acid-free and extremely resistant to aging. They should also be lignin-free, meaning they are made from linters or alpha cellulose. Lignin-free papers do not yellow over time.

Only a wide color gamut can ensure the faithful reproduction of a work of art or a photograph. The color gamut can be visually represented in a coordinate system, where the solid colors of cyan, magenta, yellow, red, green, and blue are spectrophotometrically measured and connected into an area within the coordinate system. The larger this area in the visual space, the larger the color gamut, and the more vibrant and precise the print results.

The thickness or volume of a paper influences its tactility and, consequently, the quality of the artwork or photograph. Especially for large art reproductions, whose originals were created on heavy paper, papers with a high grammage (> 300 g/m²) are recommended. (Exception: reproductions on Japanese paper such as Awagami or other specialties). A FineArt paper should also feel like a high-quality artist’s paper.

The L*a*b*-color system is the most widely used system in the field of color measurement and can also be used as a reference color space. In the CIE Lab color system, the standard spectral values have been converted into a coordinate system that better corresponds to subjective color perception. This color system allows the representation of the paper whiteness tone and the amount of optical brighteners in a print substrate.

Rauch is certified with the entire company according to FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®). This specifically means that all pulp used by our suppliers for our FSC papers comes from sustainably managed and socially beneficial forestry. This also applies to our entire downstream value chain.

More about our sustainability

An ICC profile (International Color Consortium) is a color profile that contains information allowing your photo prints to be printed on your printer with accurate colors, the widest possible color gamut, and the best possible results on a specific paper type. It includes important information about the printer’s ink type, such as matte or photo black, and the maximum amount of ink that can be applied to achieve the best printing results. Ideal conditions also include calibrating your monitor and, if possible, using appropriate image editing and color management systems.

Color profiles

You’re probably familiar with this: a print doesn’t show the colors you saw on the screen, or two prints of the same photo have different color tones – which is immediately noticeable when placed side by side. The problem almost always lies in color management. Without the correct color profile, each device interprets colors in its own “unique” way. What looked brilliant and color-accurate on the monitor can lose its entire impact once it’s printed on paper.

With our device-specific color profiles, we ensure that you get exactly what you want to see. With mediaJET®, you can always be confident in the print results.

If you want to print on one of our papers and can’t find the right “printer – paper” combination in the profile matrix, feel free to contact us directly. We offer you the possibility of perfect custom profiles, where we can profile your printed test chart on our paper. There is no better print result.
